JOB SUMMARY:

The Joint Task Force National Capital Region Medical (JTF CapMed) is the future of Military Medicine- a partnership in World Class Medical Healthcare.  The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Dilorenzo Clinic and the Joint Pathology Center, provide world class medical services to the nations service members and their families.

About the Position: This position is located in the Adult Behavioral Health Department at Ft. Belvoir Community Hospital.

 

As a result of sequestration and budget shortfalls, Department of Defense is furloughing most of its employees for some amount of time during fiscal year 2013.  An employee in this position MAY be subject to furlough.

Asa Counseling Psychologist (Substance Abuse) you will apply advanced concepts,principles, procedures, and practices, relevant to the behavioral healthservices, to conduct behavioral health and substance abuse evaluations ofpatients; Counsels patients on primary and secondary illnesses. Performanalysis of data, develop findings, and track progress. As needed, collaborateswith Management officials to identify substance abuse issues. Provide strategicinterventions, motivational interviewing techniques, and crisis counseling forpatients and families; provide family rehabilitation treatment services. Develops,and implements comprehensive treatment plans. Conducts ongoing review ofpatient progress; evaluates and modifies treatment plans to meet changingneeds. You will provide individual, group, and family psychotherapy, relapseprevention counseling, and crisis intervention counseling. Apply motivationalinterviewing strategies. Documents case records, consistent with clinicalstandards of care; conducts peer review of case records; adhere to establishedformats. Establishes instructional design of classes; develop trainingevaluation criteria.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.  Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.
Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Typical examples of such work include (but are not limited to): Developing treatment plans to help the patient stop using drugs in order to maintain a drug-free lifestyle,.  Provide crises counseling for patients in order to achieve the ultimate goal of sustained abstinence and recovery of their lives.  Conduct substance abuse group therapy, by engaging patients in behaviorally focused treatment.  These examples are typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-11.


You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

 

  • Ability to assess substance abuse patients in a medical setting
  • Professional knowledge of the Behavioral Health, alcohol, and drug rehabilitation program, concepts principles and procedures
  • Ability to Communicate Orally
  • Ability to Educate staff and patients 
     


Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade (or equivalent).


For this job, you must meet the Education requirement along with the required experience in order to qualify.

 

I have completed  a degree, major or equivalent in psychology and I have completed 2 full academic years of graduate study directly related to professional work in counseling psychology.

 Or

 

Satisfactory completion in an accredited educational institution of all the requirements for a masters degree directly related to counseling psychology .
